Practice in Proofreading

Introduction

The aim of these “tasks” is to give you practice in proofreading, i.e. identifying and correcting language errors in written work (abstracts, reports, articles etc). The texts on which the “tasks” are based are all taken from student papers. The questions take you through 3 stages:

  • a) identify the number of errors

  • b) identify the parts of the text that need attention (but without correcting them)

  •  c) correct the errors identified in the previous section.

To correct the errors (stage c), you choose the level you wish to work at : Level 1 (Easy) or Level 2 (More Difficult).

In Level 1, the mistakes to correct are underlined and you select the correct answer(s) from the list provided (multiple choice exercises).

In Level 2 (the “real life” situation), no help is given. You rewrite the text correcting the errors and compare what you have written with the solutions.

To correct a text (complete steps a + b + c) at EITHER level 1 OR level 2, you will need between 20 - 30 minutes.

Texts available:

  1. Music

  2. The Universe

  3. Cell Phones
